Yankton College, Forbes Hall of Science George G. Elmslie, 1929 Yankton College, affiliated with the Congregational Christian Churches, was the first institution of higher learning in the Dakota Territory when it was founded in 1881. Elmslie designed a number of buildings for the College, including nearby Look Dormitory; his designs for a chapel and gymnasium remained unbuilt. In 1982, the 250-acre campus was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Yankton College Historic District. The college was closed as an educational facility in 1984, and was reopened as a minimum security Federal Prison Camp four years later. However, Yankton College still exists and maintains an office off the grounds of its historic campus at 1801 Summit Avenue. Photographs courtesy of Richard Kenyon. References |
